The
various roles are described below:
Anne
Shirley (stage age early 20’s)
Anne of Green Gables is all grown up and off
to university. The free spirited red-head is
leaving Avonlea and leaving all that she knows
behind. Except of course, Gilbert Blythe, the
young man she stubbornly refuses to realize
is the man she loves. This is a demanding role
for a young actress/singer, singing in 13 of
the show numbers. Some dance is required. Vocal
range G – F.
Gilbert Blythe
(age early 20’s)
Gilbert is the classic “all-American”
boy in a Canadian context. Young, good looking,
hardworking, the quarterback on the school football
team, He is chased by all the girls in town
(except Anne). This is a demanding role for
a young actor/singer, singing in 12 of the show
numbers. Some dance is required. Vocal range
A – G.
Marilla Cuthbert
(mature)
Anne’s adopted aunt. She continues to
provide advice and guidance to Anne while struggling
to maintain the family farm. This is a demanding
role requiring sensitivity in performance and
strong singing skills. Vocal range G –
D
Mrs Rachel Lynde
(mature)
Marilla’s friend and the town busy body.
Mrs Lynde “knows all” before the
rest of Avonlea. Like Marilla, this is a demanding
role requiring sensitivity in performance and
strong singing skills. Vocal range D –
F.
Josie Pye (age
early 20’s)
Anne has what Josie wants, Gilbert Blythe. She
is on this planet to make things difficult for
Anne Shirley. Don’t worry; she comes around
before too long. Good dance skills are required.
Vocal range G – E.
Diana (age early
20’s)
She is Anne’s best friend in the world.
Diana is a fun loving individual who wants the
best for Anne and is instrumental in getting
her to University. Vocal range A – G.
Phillipa (age
early 20’s)
An unlikely friend of Anne’s at University.
She comes from a completely different walk-of-life.
Like Diana, she too loves life, particularly
the boys. Vocal range G – E.
Roy Gardner (age
20’s)
He becomes Anne’s love interest at University,
mainly because she is so stubborn and refuses
to admit what everyone else knows. That she
loves Gilbert Blythe. Vocal range B –
F
Moody McPherson
(age 20’s)
The town fiddler, required at all the parties
in Avonlea. Somewhat awkward around women but
comes into his own. Someone skilled with the
fiddle would be an asset.

Women’s
and Men’s chorus
A variety of roles, dancers, and singers will
be drawn from a busy mixed chorus of approximately
14 individuals. Generally, the chorus makes
up the student population of Avonlea and the
